Abstract

The organization and functioning regulation of the National Council for Attestation of University Titles, Diplomas and Certificates provides in Annex no. 1 regarding the Methodology for evaluation of PhD thesis that the Ministry of Education can analyse the thesis using specialized software to verify originality. As the PhD thesis, according to the Code of Doctoral Studies, must be an original scientific paper, the question arises on what should we understand by "originality" in this particular case. Therefore, this article is meant to be a brief incursion into what originality means in the current regulation of the doctoral studies in Romania. The main conclusion is that, at least in the field of doctoral thesis and strictly in the evaluation of the doctoral thesis, the originality has a special meaning, a sense specific to doctoral studies: by an original PhD thesis we understand the thesis in respect of which plagiarism has not been proven.
