Abstract
In February 2015, International Data Corporation (IDC) published a study commissioned by the BSA | The Software Alliance, analyzing the link between the use of unlicensed software and malware encounters.
This White Paper (“Unlicensed Software and Cybersecurity Threats”1) concludes that:
(i) There is a positive correlation coefficient of 0,79 between the use of unlicensed software and malware encounters;
(ii) Unlicensed software use is a strong predictor of malware encounters, at a rate of variability of 62%;
(iii) There is empirical evidence of causality link between the unlicensed software and malware encounters, resulting from lab investigation on over 800 PCs with unlicensed software and users’ survey.
